Buffalo humps are a small pad of fat and also known as dowager’s humps. You can consult your doctor about the underlying causes and the possibility of cosmetic surgery. If your buffalo hump isn’t severe, you might be able to rid of it with physical therapy or simple at-home exercises. Once you are good with your hump, you can take steps to try to prevent it from coming back.

Step 1.

Consult your doctor to discuss possible underlying causes. Go see your doctor as soon as you notice a hump formation. Your doctor can discuss in detail your medical history and determine how to proceed. These are some common causes, including:

  • Poor posture
  • Osteoporosis
  • Cushing syndrome
  • Prescription medications

Step 2.

Undergo diagnostic tests, if necessary. If your doctor suspects the reason behind hump is something other than posture, they may order some tests to figure out the actual cause. For instance, they suspect Cushing syndrome; they might do urine or blood analysis. Moreover, they might also order a bone density test or imaging, such as a CT scan, MRI, or X-ray.

 Step 3.

Discuss your medications with your doctor. Certain medications can also cause hump formation. The longer you take the medication, the higher the risk. Tell your doctor about all medicines that you are taking. If your doctor thinks the hump has anything to do with your medicine, they might tell you to stop taking it.

Step 4.

Ask questions about surgical procedures. Most people do not experience pain with a hump, but you might suffer from chronic muscle tightness or soreness. If you are in pain, or just want to get rid of that buffalo hump, talk to your doctor about surgical options. This surgery typically takes about an hour.
