What are the Symptoms of Asthma?
Symptoms of an asthma attack can include shortness of breath, painful breathing, wheezing, coughing, and pressure within the chest. In some cases, the symptoms may be worse at night. Each person’s symptoms will be different and depend on what causes the attack, any environmental factors that are present at the time, the emotional state of the patient, and any allergic reactions that may be present.
The symptoms of an attack can be acute, which means they come on suddenly, or they can be chronic. Chronic asthma symptoms are present at all times, but are often controlled through the use of maintenance medications, such as daily inhalers.
What are Common Treatment Options for Asthma?
Asthma is normally treated with steroid based medications that allow the airways to remain open. Daily inhalers, emergency inhalers, and medications that are considered to be a maintenance therapy are often prescribed. In cases where the symptoms are considered to be severe, daily breathing treatments may be prescribed as well. If allergies are also present, asthma may be able to be partially controlled through the treatment of the allergies. HEPA filters can be installed in the home to keep the exposure to allergens and other airborne contaminants to a minimum, especially if the asthma is allergy related.
Can Allergies Trigger an Asthma Attack?
An allergic reaction or exposure to common allergens can trigger an asthma attack in individuals who have severe allergies or allergies that are not being treated. Asthma attacks that are triggered by allergies can be considered acute, especially if the patient experiences anxiety during the episode.
Treating the symptoms of the allergy may relieve the severity of the asthma attack, but an emergency inhaler should be kept on hand. Individuals who have severe allergies should be evaluated by their doctor to determine if their allergies are triggering other upper respiratory problems, including asthma and bronchitis.
